Admission Arrangements 2018-2019
The Governors at Hawksworth Church of England Primary School are the Admissions Authority and it is a legal requirement that they have a clearly defined and published admission policy for the school. In the event that there are more applications than the number of places available, the governors will allocate places according to the criteria set out in the policy.
The planned admission number for September 2018 is 15.
Parents of children who are offered a place at the school before they are of compulsory school age can defer their child’s entry until later in the school year, or until the child reaches compulsory school age in that school year. Where entry is deferred, the school will hold the place for that child and not offer it to another child during the remainder of the school year. Parents cannot defer entry beyond the beginning of the term after the child’s fifth birthday, nor beyond the academic year for which the original application was accepted. Parents can also request that their child attends part-time until the child reaches compulsory school age.
Children with a statement of Special Educational Needs
Children with a statement of Special Educational Needs will be allocated a place in accordance with S.324 of the education Act 1996
If there are more applicants than places available, governors will allocate places according to the oversubscription criteria below:
Criteria for admission (in order of priority)
- Any child in the care of the Local Authority or provided with accommodation by them, including foster children, adopted children who were previously in public care and those with a residency order or special guardianship.
- Parent or child’s involvement in the work and worship of the parish churches of Guiseley with Esholt Parish (See note 1)
- Children who have at least one sibling attending Hawksworth Church of England (VA) Primary School at expected time of admission.
- A child living in Hawksworth or Esholt Village (Map attached)
- Parent or child’s involvement in another church which is associated with Churches Together in Britain and Ireland (See note 1)
- Parent or child’s involvement in another major world faith, whose parent seeks a Christian school. (See note 2)
- All other children
Tie Breaker- In the event of a tie-break the family living geographically closest to the school will be offered a place. The straight line distance measurement from the main entrance of the school to the middle of the applicant’s home will be provided by the local authority and will be used as the final determining factor.
- Church involvement is defined as attending worship at least once a month over a two or more year period. A reference from the priest or minister will be sought. (Please see the Churches Together in Britain and Ireland website. ctbi.org.uk)
- Major World Faith: Islam, Sikhism, Buddhism, Judaism and Hinduism. Parents seeking a place under criterion 6 will be required to provide a reference from their priest/ faith leader.
Common Preference Form
Applications will be made using Leeds City Council’s on-line system or the single form, known as the common preference form. These forms can be obtained from Leeds City Council or the school. Forms must be returned by the closing date of 15th January 2018. Places will be offered by the governors and parents will be notified via Leeds City Council on 16th April 2018. School will also request a Supplementary Information Form (available on the school website or from the school office) is completed and returned to the school by the closing date of 15th January 2018.
In Year Admissions
Any parent will be able to apply directly to the school at any time. An admissions form can be obtained from the school and should be returned to them. Governors will consider whether or not a place can be offered and parents will be notified of the offer / refusal of a place by the school. The school will also notify Leeds City Council of the application and its outcome.
Parents have the right to an independent appeal. Appeals against the governors’ decision not to offer places to applicants, must be made by the parents, in writing, to the Clerk of the Appeals panel, through the Headteacher of the school within 20 days of the parents receiving notice that a place has not been offered to their child.
Where a child is refused an offer of a place in the school, the parents may request that the child’s name be placed on the school’s waiting list with the school. The waiting list will be maintained for the remainder of the academic year for which the application was made. Waiting lists will be maintained in order of the over-subscription priorities.
